Dry Forest

Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests, here called "dry forests", are found throughout Latin America from Mexico to  south-western Brazil and northern Argentina. They can be highly variable in appearance, from tall forest to low scrub, but all are formations are characterized by a long period of drought when many of the plants lose their leaves. They differ from savannas, which grow under similar climates, by their generally complete canopy and lack of a grassy ground vegetation. They usually grow on fertile soils and are therefore more prone to cutting for agriculture. For our work we use the broad definition where dry forest includes forest in frost free regions with several months of drought. Using such a wide definition of dry forest is deliberate because it will, allow investigation of the relations between different dry forest formations across their full continental range.
