The National Herbarium of Bolivia (LPB) - which depends on an agreement signed between the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (UMSA) and the Academy of Sciences of Bolivia - was created in 1984 as a scientific research center for the documentation of flora and vegetation of Bolivia. It takes place in La Paz, a dry inter-Andean valley. Currently it has more than 330,000 herbarium specimens that correspond to approximately 13,000 species. It is a well know reference of botanical research not only nationally but internationally. LPB also supports the academic programs of the UMSA for biology graduate and master degrees. Recently, 40 research projects were presented carried out by 30 researchers (staff and associated).

The partner network is Dr. Mónica Moraes who has worked on flora, vegetation and phytogeography of Bolivia since 1986 with emphasis on savannas, forests and palm populations. Through publications, she has contributed to the preparation of vegetation maps, floristic inventories and assessments of the conservation status of species in inter-Andean valleys, as in other Bolivian landscapes. She also has studied the Neotropical genus Allagoptera (Arecaceae), representative of the Cerrado,
shared by Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay.
